Pre-WWII 1929 US Navy Good Conduct Medal USS Penguin AM33 Pharmacists Mate Named Tabs. Named to Paul E Pirrone who was a Pharmacist Mate USS Penguin Lapwing-class Minesweeper. Served in Haitian Campaign, China WWI, and Interwar period around the world. Direct from his Estate. Both Clasps are named and engraved to! Choice medal more of his medals will be available this week. Arrived in New York in November 1919 and, after a major overhaul, was sent to join the Pacific Fleets Mine Squadron 4, which was based in the eastern Pacific. Continued working as a minesweeper until 1 June 1922, when she was decommissioned and placed in reserve at Pearl Harbor. Was re-commissioned 13 October 1923 and was converted into a gunboat for service with the US Navys Asiatic Fleet. She left Pearl Harbor and headed west to become part of the famous Yangtze Patrol and was based at Shanghai. Although this was supposed to be only a temporary assignment. Remained with the Yangtze Patrol for seven years, protecting American lives and property while battling Chinese pirates and warlords. Sailed to Cavite in the Philippines for a brief period of time before being ordered to go to Guam. With the coming of World War II in the Pacific, Japan invaded China and was making ominous moves towards many of the islands in the region. Was ordered to increase her patrols around Guam and to guard against any Japanese warships that could potentially threaten the island. No one really knew, though, what the small and poorly armed gunboat could do if it encountered units from the enormous Japanese Navy. US Navy Good Conduct Medal issued to James R. Ross for service on the submarine USS O-14 in 1920. The medal also has bars for the USS Vestal (dated 1922), USS Idaho (1926) and Radio Stations 12. At the top of the ribbon is WWI Victory Medal bar Submarine (official Fulford type). The medal and all four bars were long ago polished and then shellacked. Ross was born in Penrod, Kentucky in 1891 and had two brief USN enlistments between 1910 and 1912. He then reenlisted in 1916 and served continuously until transferred to the Reserves in 1934, as well as being recalled for active duty during WWII. In addition to the O-14, he also served on the submarines N-7 and R-22. Rosss service file notes that he was issued a Victory Medal with Submarine bar in 1921 however his service file doesnt show any sub service during WWI. He also has service on the aircraft carrier USS Langley in 1931 and on the battleship USS West Virginia from 1932 to 1934. All WWII Service was in the USA. With the badge are over 50 pages of documents that were scanned from Rosss service file at the Military Personnel Records Center in St. All of the documents shown are color copies. These will be provided on CD-ROM. The photo of the USS O-14 is also an online copy. Terms of sale: All medals are unconditionally guaranteed as original. Group of US Navy medals to Machinists Mate 1st Class William A. Please note that ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS and PHOTOS are NOT included with the medals. US Navy Good Conduct Medal Officially named and dated 1924, with two bars. The top bar is engraved USS Argonne and on the reverse CSC 79137, 5 Jan 1929. Note that this CSC number matches the one on the medal. The lower bar is dated 1933 and is engraved on the reverse William Albert Marth. The medal has the original ribbon and the narrow full wrap brooch that was unique to the USN GCM in the 1920s. US Navy Yangtze Service Medal, officially numbered on the rim, M. 5037, with original ribbon and full wrap brooch. Issue of this medal is confirmed by number by several documents in Marths service file. Marths qualifying service for the medal was on the destroyer USS Sicard from 1926 to 1927. The Yangtze Service Medal was authorized by Navy Department General Order No. It was designed by John R. Sinnock, Chief Engraver of the US Mint, and was struck by the Mint at Philadelphia in 1933. The obverse design features a Chinese junk at half sail and the legend Yangtze Service. It was awarded to sailors of the Asiatic Fleet, serving on the Yangtze River and at Shanghai, China. The period of eligible service for the medal was September 1926 to October 1927 and March 1930 to December 1932. Also included is a VFW medal and a ribbon bar. The VFW medal was obtained with the other two above but I dont have any records to document Marths membership in the organization. Ive seen records from the 1930s that indicated that being the recipient of a Yangtze Service Medal entitled a veteran to membership in the VFW. Included with the medals is a color COPY of 26 pages from Marths Navy service file. It summarizes all of his service from 1920 until his retirement in 1940. He did not serve in the Navy during WWII. These records were scanned at the Military Personnel Records Center in St. Please note that NO ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS OR PHOTOS are included with the medals. You will receive color copies of the ones shown. Terms of sale: This medal is unconditionally guaranteed as original.
