Note – go to my other listings to see the dress cap for this uniform; and, other early usphs uniform items from this officer to come so keep checking back in the next week or so! THIS IS THE FINE WOOL WWI DRESS UNIFORM OF CAREER USPHS / NIH DR. AND SURGEON CHARLES ARMSTRONG. IT MATCHES THE DRESS HAT STILL UP AS OF 11/10. IT IS CUSTOM-MADE AND DATED 1916. IT’S VERY NOTABLE IN SEVERAL WAYS. THE QUALITY IS SUPERB: SOFT MELTON WOOL AND EXTENSIVE HAND-WOVEN BULLION ON NECK CUFFS AND SHOULDERS. REMARKABLY ENOUGH GIVEN MENS’ SIZES 100 YEARS AGO IT IS EXTREMELY LARGE. I’D SAY 42-43L OR EVEN EXTRA LONG! I WEAR 42-44 L AND I HALF-PUT IT ON, SLEEVE WAS PERFECT. AS FOR BODY, THIS DOC WAS PROBABLY AVERAGE/THIN; IT WAS TIGHT. BUT THEN I’M 6 FOOT 4, 200# AND’BUILT. CONDITION IS ALSO AMAZING – NO MOTHING, NOT EVEN NIPS VISIBLE! SOME OF THE BULLION IS LIGHTLY TARNISHED BUT IT’S ALL INTACT AS ARE ALL SEAMS, BUTTONS ETC. (SOME PIX SHOW TINY WHITE SPOTS- JUST LINT WHICH I’VE BRUSHED OFF). THE MATCHING TROUSERS ARE EXCEPTIONAL AS WELL – SAME CONDITION AS THE FROCK COAT. FINALLY, IT’S ESPECIALLY RARE B/C THE USPHS WAS AND REMAINS A VERY SMALL FEDERAL AGENCY. MATERIAL LIKE THIS ONLY SELDOM COMES TO MARKET! AND AGAIN – MORE OF HIS UNIFORMS TO COME, SO NOTE WELL. Note EXTREME generous start price! (less than the value of the button set alone). NO MATTER HOW SMALL THE ITEM I USE AN ENVELOPE BIG ENUF FOR A U. CHANGING ADDRESSES AFTER THE SALE IS MADE – ESPECIALLY U. TO FOREIGN – IS UNWELCOME AND SLOWS THE PROCESS ON ALL SIDES. Group of US Navy medals to Machinists Mate 1st Class William A. Please note that ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS and PHOTOS are NOT included with the medals. US Navy Good Conduct Medal Officially named and dated 1924, with two bars. The top bar is engraved USS Argonne and on the reverse CSC 79137, 5 Jan 1929. Note that this CSC number matches the one on the medal. The lower bar is dated 1933 and is engraved on the reverse William Albert Marth. The medal has the original ribbon and the narrow full wrap brooch that was unique to the USN GCM in the 1920s. US Navy Yangtze Service Medal, officially numbered on the rim, M. 5037, with original ribbon and full wrap brooch. Issue of this medal is confirmed by number by several documents in Marths service file. Marths qualifying service for the medal was on the destroyer USS Sicard from 1926 to 1927. The Yangtze Service Medal was authorized by Navy Department General Order No. It was designed by John R. Sinnock, Chief Engraver of the US Mint, and was struck by the Mint at Philadelphia in 1933. The obverse design features a Chinese junk at half sail and the legend Yangtze Service. It was awarded to sailors of the Asiatic Fleet, serving on the Yangtze River and at Shanghai, China. The period of eligible service for the medal was September 1926 to October 1927 and March 1930 to December 1932. Also included is a VFW medal and a ribbon bar. The VFW medal was obtained with the other two above but I dont have any records to document Marths membership in the organization. Ive seen records from the 1930s that indicated that being the recipient of a Yangtze Service Medal entitled a veteran to membership in the VFW. Included with the medals is a color COPY of 26 pages from Marths Navy service file. It summarizes all of his service from 1920 until his retirement in 1940. He did not serve in the Navy during WWII. These records were scanned at the Military Personnel Records Center in St. Please note that NO ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS OR PHOTOS are included with the medals. You will receive color copies of the ones shown. Terms of sale: This medal is unconditionally guaranteed as original.
