This is a rare variant on the Dutch M38 (KNIL type) combat helmet. While all the M27-34-38 had a rolled edge, this example has a sharp edge. These helmets were made by Verblifa (Vereenigde Blik Fabrieken) after the German occupation of the Netherlands in 1940. The sharp brim made the production cheaper. The chin strap and liner are Original M34. Pads are original and in very good condition. The helmets were issued to police, civil defence and luftschuss units and could be bought privately as well. Nowadays very few examples in this Sharp-brimmed style are known. These helmets never had the bronze lion badge on the front. Notice the absence of the neck protection and adjustion strap in the rear of the liner, another specialty of this helmet. A wonderful survivor, rarely seen in this condition. These KNIL-helmets were manufactured (post-1940, pre-1945) in de USA (Milwaukee Saddlery Company, Milsco) after the occupation of Holland by the Germans and was used against the Japanese in 1941/42. The helmet was opainted in dark grey after WW2 to be used in the national state police, the Rijkpolitie. These Milsco helmets never had the heraldic lion of The Kingdom welded! The sun protection leather was cut off (for use in Rijkspolitie after WW2). The liner with the 4 horse-hair pouches fixed together is perfect, as is the special KNIL-type chin strap. These along with other helmets in service with the Spanish Army were all withdrawn in 1943 and refurbished, they had a coating of a light green paint and frontal brackets to hold the new “Franco” badges, most of the older M26’s etc had the liners replaced too. However this one still retains the original 3-piece liner in good condition. For sale is a Polish M31-36 or M35 helmet, built up from an original helmet and chin strap from another WW2 helmet. These liners are very similar to those used in the Polish M35. Poland developed these helmets to fit the new 1936 uniform. Nowadays they are only for sale at high prices. The helmet was restored from a faintly oxidized condition, but with a big crack in the neck and 2 small cracks in the brim. I gave it a smooth anti-reflex paint.
