1920S-1930S UNITED STATES ARMY C ERTIFICATE OF MERIT MEDAL, W/ WRAP BROOCH. ASSEMBLED BY GEORGE W. STUDLEY – STRUCK BY DAVIDSON OF PHILADELPHIA. R E-BROOCHED DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The Certificate of Merit Medal was a military decoration of the United States Army that was issued between the years of 1905 and 1918. The Certificate of Merit Medal replaced the much older Certificate of Merit which was authorized by the United States Congress on March 3, 1847. The system of military awards and decorations presented to members of the United States Military can trace its lineage to the Badge of Military Merit. This military award, established by George Washington, was given in recognition of soldiers who displayed unusual gallantry or extraordinary fidelity. Awarded three times during the Revolutionary War, the Badge of Military Merit was not awarded again. Thus, for more than 50 years the United States Military had no official military decorations. In 1905, a medal was created for those holding a Certificate of Merit and called the Certificate of Merit Medal. This medal was authorized for wear on a United States military uniform. It was always worn following the Medal of Honor, before all campaign medals. The first recipient of the Certificate of Merit Medal was First Lieutenant William B. Baker, who was presented medal No. 1 on 30 December 1907. Baker had received an original Certificate of Merit as a Corporal during the SpanishAmerican War on 13 August 1898. The last act recognized by a Certificate of Merit was May 1918, when Corporal Paul Scaletta made a water rescue of soldiers in dangerous surf condition at Ocean Beach, California. The last soldier to be awarded the Certificate of Merit Medal was George Arrington for his service while a Private with the 24th Infantry Regiment in 1889. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! The item “U. S. ARMY CERTIFICATE OF MERIT MEDAL WRAP BROOCH GEORGE W. STUDLEY EXAMPLE” is in sale since Wednesday, November 7, 2018. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Militaria\1919-38\Original Period Items”. The seller is “medal_mulisha_store” and is located in Los Angeles, California. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Extremely Rare Turkey Turkish Republic Pilot Badge with a Certificate
Extremely Rare Turkish Republic Pilot Badge with a Certificate. 60 mm(width) x 50 mm(height). Badge is in great condition for its age and rarity, only small traces of wearing. This badge is modeled after a WW1 pilot’s badge, and the inscription at the top of the badge where the tughra would have been says “TC (Turkish Republic) – In memory of 10 years”. Taken by itself, I would have said that the already badge is a unique and unexampled item, but the document tells a much interesting story. The document is a graduation diploma from the Eskiehir aviation school. What they have done in this case is scratch out the usual wording and written in that this is a special award in recognition of 10 years’ service, to a “Tecnikci” or technician, who(probably) was an employee of the aviation school. That confirms that the badge is probably one of a kind. It is very interesting and unusual that the awarded military man has a Russian surname. Most likely heRussian pilot? Got into the Turkish military aviation school after the civil war in Russia, fleeing to Turkey from the Bolsheviks. The badge depicted on the diploma is – one would presume – something that was awarded to graduates of the aviation school. Obviously it is also modeled after the Ottoman pilot’s badge, but with the foundation date of the empire removed, and the “TC” or Turkish Republic cypher added at the top. This confirms that such badges were used by the Republic after the change to Latin writing at the end of 1928. Translation of the diploma. Pilotluk derecesi/piloting degree. Rasitlik derecesi/aviation degree. Teknik derecesi/ technical degree: 1. A Diplom to a flyer graduated from school of Aviation. This diplom is presented for the 10th Anniversary of Turkish Republic.
