In the Background an assembly of Military Planes & Bi-Planes can be seen marked Photo by E. Souza, Washington DC a Great Historical Photograph, showing a pivotal time in the development of Military Flight & Air power! #2 of 2 Great Photographs acquired from the same estate. The first panoramic photograph is another view of the same Group & field. At this time Langley was home to the newly organized’Air Service’.. Billy Mitchell, who had commanded legions of Allied planes in World War I, was intent on proving the combat value of a weapon still widely and stubbornly dismissed by such figures as Asst. Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Mobilizing the young airmen of Langleys pioneering Air Service Tactical School, Mitchell instituted a revolutionary training program designed to pit aerial bombs against seemingly impregnable battleships, which most strategists of the day saw as the nations best coastal defense. Billy Mitchell was a very controversial figure. But he knew what he was doing, says John V. Quarstein, author of World War I on the Virginia Peninsula, sizing up the historic demonstrations in which the visionary general and his fliers destroyed the 27,000-ton German dreadnought Ostfriesland and three obsolete American battleships. Outstanding 1919 Pilots Tunic. Bullion Air Service collar insignia. WW1 Victory ribbon with FIVE stars!! Croix de guerre ribbon with one star. Bullion WW1 French Pilots wing. Three Bullion overseas strips and two Bullion wound strips. In one of the more amazing what were they thinking moments you can see the outline and some thread damage where someone carefully removed a US Pilots wing!!!!! Why you would just remove the US wing is beyond me! There is some fairly minor mothing on the sleeve, front and inside illustrated in the pictures. A very, VERY rare tunic and insignia. It has been suggested by more then one person that I remove the French wing and sell separately but this is the way it came so this is the way it sells! The item “SUPER RARE 1919 Pilot tunic. Noble Air Corp Pilot Wing Badge. This wing was made by F. Noble of Chicago probably in the immediate post WWI era and is one of the rarest and most sought after wing badges by collectors today. Wing is pinback, marked sterling and carries the Noble hallmark which is a very small n in a circle in front of the sterling mark.
