This is an original very large Garrison flag given to Imperial Japanese 1st Fleet Admiral Seizo Kobayashi from the crew of the battleship Kongo. Admiral Kobayashi was the 1st Fleet Admiral from 1931 to 1933 and later went on to be the 17th Governor General of Taiwan. He served on the Kongo early in his career as a gunnery Officer, so the flag was probably given to him by the crew upon his retirement from the military. The flag is very large and has three panels sewn together with heavy leather tabs on one side, it measures 12 feet 8 inches by 8 feet 5 inches. There are some stains on the flag in several spots, but no holes or rips, it is in excellent condition for its age. This is a great piece of military history. All our items come from estate sales, yard sales, or places that we have traveled. All Japanese items came from Japan. I lived in Japan for 8 years and collected several nice pieces.
