The Finnish Civil Guard designed sword bayonets for its M28 and M28-30 rifles. The first M28 bayonet is similar to the M27; so similar that they are basically identical. The only differences are internal. The second Civil Guard bayonet, for the M28-30 rifle, was left in the white. The fancy wooden bolsters are made of curly birch. The bayonet had a re-designed blade with grip panels attached with screw type fasteners, as opposed to the rivets on earlier bayonets. This made repairs much easier, using a special tool. A fluted steel scabbard had been issued with the bayonet but proved to be unsuitable. It got replaced with new blued smooth steel scabbard. A cleaning / oiling hole was added to the pommel. The M28-30 bayonet was manufactured by both Hackman & Co and Fiskars between 1934 – 1939; producing about 28,000 bayonets. Manufactured by Hackman, and so marked on the ricasso. It comes in a smooth scabbard, and has a bright blade. The Civil Guard markings “SKY” and “-S-” acceptance stamps are stamped on the ricasso and cross guard. Finnish manufacturers delivered only about 130,000 sword style bayonets to their Army and Civil Guard by 1945. Compare that to the MILLIONS of bayonets produced for the Mauser/Enfield/Mosin Nagant families of rifles! These Finnish bayonets are considered rare, and getting more so with time. The culmination of multipurpose forestry axe. Finnish people have used and relied on axes thousands of years and this is culmination of that use and continuous development, honed to perfection. Axe was tool to choose to when puukko was not tool enough. It was used from cutting down trees in forest to building log houses and anything in between. Finnish woodworkers had reputation with making long lasting quality log houses and they needed good tools (axes) for that. Good example, one of United States oldest wood building still standing, was made by Finns, C. This is very rarely seen variant of this axe model, Finnish army (SA-stamp) “Pioneerikirves”, pioneers/engineers axe, note that original hole in middle. Good condition blade, need sharpening of course. Finnish axe heads looks often very beaten up when used because of mushroomed poll, but that is partly designed feature. Poll of these is not meant for hitting anything other than wood wedges or wooden dowels and stakes (soft targets), but as designers knew, these axes were going to be misused as (sledge)hammers and as wedges anyway, they made that poll very very soft for protecting eye from crushing and misshaping and also for giving direct visual feedback to user. Different parts of axe head are heat treated differently and actual blade part is laminated different material, they really knew what they were doing when making these! All Finnish axe makers had exactly similar models, it is not always possible to distinguish Billnäs, Kellokoski or Strömfors from each other when stamp is not visible, but here Billnäs stamp is clearly visible. Original condition, not painted, just oiled. No sharpening done by me, but this still is sharp enough to cut yourself if you are not careful. Included are directions for making proper handle for Finnish axe, which differs from any other style of axes. Usually most people have no clue how to put handle to finnish model axe head and end result is axe that looks stupid and does not work as intended. Sample of what can be done with axe like this. Study images carefully as they are most important part of description, ask more if needed. Ask if anything uncertain. Check out my other items too! Finnish M/19 Puukkopistin made By E&F Hörster in Germany for Finnish Army. Started off as a dress knife for NCO to wear in lieu of a sword. Designed by the famous Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Sometimes referred to as NCO Puukko, Gallen-Kallela Puukko, or M/22 Puukko because it is the shorter version Puukkopistin which was added and approved for wear in 1922. It is called a Puukkopistin or Knife Bayonet because it is really a knife, but it looks like it has a bayonet lock button on the bottom of the pommel. Eventually almost all Finnish Army ranks were allowed to wear one. There is a wood handle version for the lowest ranks. It also became not just a dress Puukko but a daily use puukko. Used not only by the Finnish Army, but also by the Civil Guard as well as by Finnish Police. Grip has chip out of it, crossguard is loose, and blade is rough. Price reflects condition so this is an excellent opportunity to own a rare piece of Finnish military history, carried from post Civil War to Winter War and Continuation War. Can pair M19 aka M22 with M/39 Bayonet Leather Sheath I have listed. Sheath is big for it but it fits.
