1936 WDP Oklahoma Belt Buckle WPA Armories War Department Colonel Eagle, Scarce – 1936 was the height of Oklahoma National Guard Armory Construction through the WPA Projects, there were 51 new armories constructed between 1935 – 1937, this buckle is from that project. ORIGINAL, RARE & VG+ M1926 Air Corps Blouse, Breeches, Cap & Sam Browne Belt. This is without doubt the rarest ORIGINAL M1926 Officer’s brown gabardine “cavalry twill” uniform grouping I collected in the last 30 years. This blouse was apparently privately-tailored, as befits an Air Corps Major, as attested by the tailor’s label in the inside breast pocket (see image below). The blouse is fully-lined in golden brown cotton twill fabric and has the typical period striped lining in the sleeves and two-piece buttons of the period (see images below). The label in the inside breast pocket states it is a 40 Long. The blouse has the following actual measurements measured flat: Chest: 21″; Sleeves: 26″; Waist: 18″; Shoulders: 19″; and Overall Length: 34. As was typically the case, the insignia on the blouse is all sewn-on GOLD BULLION, rather than the pinback insignia of the period. Since this was a era when pilots flew in the Class A dress uniform, the gold bullion insignia was used in order to prevent it from getting snagged by the parachute harness webbing. The blouse is in VERY GOOD+ used condition and has a few moth nips on the elbow, collar and back of the left sleeve (see images below), but no holes, tears or other blemishes! The sides have the belt hooks present, ready to hang the officer’s “Sam Browne Belt” (37 maximum size) which came with the uniform grouping as the finishing touch! As was the fashion of the time, the pilot’s uniform grouping came with a pair of drab shade or “pink” breeches or riding pants in the usual gabardine twill “wool elastique” fabric. The breeches are in even better condition, with just one moth nip on the seat near the crotch and no holes or tears in them. The following measurements were taken from the breeches lying flat: Waist: 36″; Hips: 30″; Rise (waist to crotch): 16″ and Overall: 40″. It too was privately-tailored, but the tailor’s label is now illegible (see image below). Last, but certainly not least, is the matching brown “cavalry twill” visor cap. As was the fashion for pilots who wore headphones while flying in the cabins of aircraft not requiring a flying helmet, the “grommet” or stiffener has been removed from the cap, giving it the appearance of what came to be termed a “crush cap” during WWII. The cap has the smaller “spread eagle” cap insigne of the pre-WWII period, measuring 2 from wingtip to wingtip. The cap is also in VERY GOOD condition, but has a few moth nips on the crown of the cap toward the front and on the left side. The inside of the cap is well-marked with maker’s name (see images below). The headliner which has the maker’s label has come loose at the back, but might be glued back to the sweatband if desired. The size of the cap is approximately 7-1/8 or 22.4 in circumference (57 in a European cap size). Here we have a complete M1921 Sam Browne belt with its original sword hanger in very good, almost pristine condition. The only flaw is a couple unknown stains on the inside of the shoulder strap as shown in photo #5. To my understanding these were made between 1921-ca. Its in a hard-to-find size, with the belts outer limit being a mens size 31 or 32 with the ability to tighten it probably to around a size 28 or even smaller. Features a metal sword hanger chain most likely intended for a US Army M1902 Sword For All Officers. The wide, thick belt is strong enough to support a sword & a holstered pistol, and Im sure other stuff like magazine pouches, etc. Can be comfortably secured to it as well. Simply stunning grouping of military worn items from a survivor of the USS Maine sinking consisting of. A high-quality pair of French-made epaulettes with gold bullion fringe, Naval button, anchor, and lieutenant insignia bars, and a black sealskin fore and aft hat, or cocked hat, with gold bullion tassels; these are housed in their original black tin carrying case, 18.5 x 7 x 8. Navy officer’s belt rig, approximately 40 in length, which exhibits some dryness and flaking to leather. Lieutenant George Helms was a career Navy officer and the Chief Carpenter on the USS Maine when it exploded in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. Helms enlisted in the United States Navy on December 10, 1894, and was one of 23 Naval officers and 60 enlisted sailors, as well as one Marine Corps officer and 11 Marine Corps enlisted men, that survived the Naval disaster, a catalyst to the 10-week-long Spanish-American War. In all 260 Naval and Marine personnel lost their lives as a result of the explosion and the subsequent sinking of the USS Maine. Helms served in the U. Navy for 34 years before his retirement on April 26, 1929. Helms is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Of the 94 survivors, 16 were uninjured. While we are not certain of the date that Helms wore these, they remain an incredible connection to one of history’s most famous events.
