#82 POLISH POLAND WWII ORDER OF THE VIRTUTI MILITARI, 5TH CL. Rubin was a jeweler in Tel Aviv who made the VM for the Polish Forces stationed in the Middle East. He made only the 5th and 4th class and the Monte Cassino Cross. These were made in bronze/brass metal and plated in silver or gold. The silver gilt is worn on this example. Another jeweler in Italy made all five classes. Both types, the Palestinian and Italian VMs are very rare. Spinks made the only the grand cross and the 4th and 5th classes. By Wesolowski and a new book by Stella. Bialkiewicz after the war made a few of these in a more superb quality then the Rubin wartime production. I have posted his 4th class for comparison. Since it was impossible to get a VM during the war except in England, Rubins VMs were the only ones available, wartime quality production and they were awarded in the field. Tens crews launched their B-24 Liberators into the dark, cold morning air on March 14, 1945 from. William Bradley flew next to Lt. Who commanded the aircraft as they headed to bomb the Marshaling Yard at Nove Zamky, Hungary. Their crew of twelve included two navigators, a radar nav, bombardier. Engineer, radio operator, and four gunners. The overall mission was deemed a success, but the only man to survive on Martzs crew had a dramatic tale to tell. Memorial Day, where we remember those who have died in battle, seemed an appropriate time to tell a story about a distant Parks relative, Lt. William Bradley, who died in World War II. My husband had become particularly interested in him (a cousin once removed) after he discovered William and his brother were fellow Georgia Tech yellow jackets. The oldest brother graduated in 1941, and William entered that year as a freshman. William left college two years later in 1943, as many young men did, to go to war. He was commissioned a 2LT in the Army Air Corp in 1943 and assigned to the 781st Bomb Squadron, 465 Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, flying B-24 Liberators. The the unit trained at McCook field Nebraska and operated until the war in Europe ended in 1945. The only man to survive William Bradleys last flight was engineer, T/Sgt. Beeson, who told his story about the fateful flight. Today that story and many others are printed in a booklet. Of the units history published by the 781. Below is an abbreviated version of that event told by Beeson in 1987. The bombing run to the marshaling yard was not different than many others. The flak, while not as heavy as theyd encountered before, had pegged the formations location. The crew successfully unloaded their bombs over the target and were preparing to turn and head home. The tail gunner reported flak following their line of flight, bursting closer and closer. An explosion shook their craft. Fire burst on the pilots side as flak came up from underneath his seat. A single glance revealed Martz had died. The last thing Beeson saw on the flight. Deck as he hit the bailout alarm was Lt. Bradley attempting to control the damaged aircraft. Beeson grabbed his chute and dropped into the bomb bay where the bombardier joined. Him with chute in hand. The plane lurched, and Beeson fell out, facing up where he could see the plane above going around and around. He never saw where it crashed. Reported three or four chutes leaving the plane, but the unfriendly Hungarians below with their town in flames likely left them no chance for survival. Beeson lived to tell the tale because. He was rescued from the villagers hands by a German soldier. So many people have died in WWII and other wars our nation has fought. I appreciate their sacrifice to allow my friends and family to live in this great country. Some of the other photos in the book are. Photo shows WW11 – crew 29/ C. Photo shows Vernie, France, 5/28/1919, Battery F, 8th Field Artillery. 7th Brigade, 7th Division. 5 3/4 by approx. Some photos show the Destruction of WWI, Vernia, France. 3 3/4 by approx. 5 3/4 also shows Crew 29 C. Has the autographs in the back of the photo (as pictured). Rare French Foreign Legion Medal & Document Group 1920's 1940s. 1er REC
Offered here is an incredibly rare and extensive French Foreign Legion medal/document group to one man, Charles Volmer (Vollmer) a. Senior NCO with 1er REC, Legion Etrangere (1st Regiment of Foreign Cavalry, French Foreign Legion). This group is absolutely original and as found. It was obtained directly from a family member of Volmer (great-grand daughter). Nothing has been pieced together or added. Volmer began service with the Legion in North Africa in the 1920s and served with them through the end of the war. After the war, Volmer continued his service with the French military police/legal administration in the French zone of Occupied Germany. The material included here are as follows – Croix de Guerre TOE medal w/ two stars, Colonial Medal w/ claps for Sahara and Maroc, Combatant’s Cross, Moroccan Order of Ouissam Alaouite Al Alaoui, ribbon bar, rank stripe, Autonomous Group 1er REC pocket badge (rare), Comité des Amitiés Africaines pocket badge, Military Police – French Zone of Military Occupation Germany pocket badge (very scarce) and General Personnel, French Zone of Military Occupation Germany pocket badge (very scarce), two photo certificates for medal awards and one French Zone of Military Occupation Hunting License along with Volmer’s pigskin leather wallet and one business card which itemizes Volmer’s decorations. Also present are six Diplome and citations for all of Volmer’s valor and service awards: Medaille Militaire, Croix de Guerre TOE, Colonial Medal, Sahara Clasp, Colonial Medal, Moroc Clasp, Combatant’s Cross, Moroccan Order of Ouissam Alaouite Al Alaoui, Volmer’s French Mle35 Motorized Troops helmet (very scarce). Also accompanying this group and included as supporting provenance is a collection of seven pieces of paper identification belonging to Volmer’s wife, issued by a variety of French civilian and military authorities, to include passport, travel and a safe conduct pass issued by the Free French Forces administration in Tunisia. Condition wise, the medals are ex-fine, the Moroccan Order having some minor enamel damage, as often seen. The Diplome and certificates are mostly good, some with minor tears, one certificate had been folded to the point of separation (happened long ago, as evidenced by ancient tape marks). The Helmet is quite nice, it’s missing one liner suspension spring hook from the inside front, the leather being mostly good, still soft with only a few minor stress issues. The paint, outside leather and badge are exceptional. All in all, this is a tremendously historic group and it represents the outstanding and courageous service of a superior soldier in an elite unit. A group of this caliber is nearly impossible to find. I’ve searched extensively and can’t find a comparable group to a Legionnaire. More pics available upon request. Please contact me if you have additional questions. The item “Rare French Foreign Legion Medal & Document Group 1920’s 1940s. 1er REC” is in sale since Saturday, October 15, 2016.
