The sword is 26 3/4 long and stamped USN 1943 NWP one one side and N. AMES SPRINGFIELD on the other. The SPRINGFIELD stamp is faint but visible. On the handle is stamped NWP on one side of the small scroll at the base and what looks like WAJ on the other side (see photos). The piece is in remarkably good condition for its age with some pitting and scratches to the blade and lots of patina to the handle. The blade is not sharpened. There are some scratches to the handle and what looks like paint marks. The scabbard has some cracks and loss to the leather but is again remarkably intact. The threads down the seam have failed and there is a some wear to the brass top and base. I know very little about this sword but it appears to be right for its age and maker. This is a very cool sword that is amazingly well preserved and will be a great addition to any collection. The item “N. P. AMES USN CUTLASS Pre Civil War Short Sword Springfield with Scabbard RARE” is in sale since Thursday, October 10, 2019. This sale is for a rare vintage U. Army M-1904 leather saddle scabbard. The scabbard was produced under military contract by the Lawrence Co. Portland, Oregon, on or near 1917 – 1918. The scabbard was produced to accommodate the Army M-1903 Springfield rifle. The scabbard has the “LAWRENCE” mark and also S. Which could be the inspectors initials. This leather scabbard does not have the two tie down straps or belts. The condition of this scabbard is very good. All of the stitching is tight and complete, the brass rivets and copper washers are also tight and in good condition. The hole at the bottom of the scabbard still contains the brass grommet. There is one or two gouges in the leather from usage. The item “Rare US Army M-1904 CAVALRY SCABBARD M-1903 Springfield Rifle McClellan Saddle” is in sale since Wednesday, April 10, 2019.
