This is an unofficial medal given to USMC Marines in Shanghai China in the 1930’s to commerate actions in the Soochow Creek area of the city. Ours is a REPRODUCTION of the 1937 version. Fully marked tag dates jacket to 12/26/1934 which coincides with his time spent in Quantico, VA. The epaulettes were found with jacket but may have been added at a later date in Groff’s career, since the leather straps are a tad short to fasten to jacket and safety pins were used to hold in place. No pants were found, just the jacket. Condition of jacket is very good with no moth holes, no smell and very clean. The inside collar red fabric has a partial tear and will need to be re-sewn/repaired(see close up photo). Outer gold applied collar will need to be re-sewn in a few areas, as it is loose in spots. John Groff (February 14, 1890 October 2, 1990) was a Brigadier General in the United States Marine Corps whose military career spanned from 1912 to 1946. Groff was a highly decorated veteran of World War I, earning the Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Purple Heart medals. He also participated in the Banana Wars (in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Nicaragua), and World War II. At the time of his death in 1990 at age 100, BG Groff was the oldest surviving general officer in the Marine Corps. ORIGINAL, RARE & VG Condition USMC Square Tip “Entrenching” Machete (Collins). The is an ORIGINAL (not one of the crummy reproductions) of the “Holy Grail” of the machetes issued to Marines prior to and during WWII. The square tipped “entrenching” or “intrenching” as M. Cole refers to it at page 40 of “Military Knives, Bayonets and Machetes, Book III” machete is a Collins No. The machete is in good used condition, with the wooden handle intact with all four rivets. It appears that the blade was deliberately “subdued” by bluing or black paint to reduce reflection. The scabbard is in good used condition too, but as often the case, the leather tip is damaged from dry rot (see images below). This is an increasingly rare item of “782” or “deuce” gear for the advanced Marine collector, which first shows up in the 1938 edition of the “Landing-Force Manual”.
