Czech model 1930 combat helmet, issued and used during the Spanish civil war. Nice example of a scarce helmet. These were initially developped for the Czech military, but not witheld as the final choice. They were mainly exported to Spain, Ethiopia and the Netherlands!!! And saw extensive use during the Spanish civil war. Shell has no dings, cracks or holes. Two typical Austro-Hungarian vent lugs, one on each side. It has a smooth green-greyish paint. “Front” has two tiny holes punched in, to accomodate an insigna. It’s never really clear how the Spanish wore these.. Bigger visor in front, or in the back.. And depended mostly on whomever got it issued. The liner is the standard Spanish 3-pad leather one. Consisting of 3 leather parts fixed on a leather liner band, wich is rivetted to the shell. The chinstrap is some kind of replacement from the civil war… They used whatever they could lay their hands on. A great addition to any collection! Trough the European Union aswell. This was the second helmet developed by the Arsenal of the Artillery in Trubia. It was submitted in 1926 for examination. Spain officially adopted the model in 1930. At once 20.000 pieces were ordered. The helmet was also known as the helmet with wings (‘con ala’). The model was widely used in the Spanish Civil war by both parties. The orange star (as I believe) means that the hat belonged to somebody enlisted in the artillery regiment of the Red Army. Although there is no date on the budenovka, the year can be determined by the symbol on the hat, which is that of a hammer and plow. This was the symbol of Soviet Russia prior to 1922, when the classic hammer and sickle symbol became their new official emblem. Trotsky once complained about Red Army soldiers, saying they “They would rather give their life than clean their rifle”. To the Red Army’s credit, they overcame near impossible odds to defeat the Whites in the Russian Civil War. You can tell by the feel of the hat this it is 100% original. The cloth that made this hat is no longer able to be produced anywhere in the world. The hat is in outstanding condition for its age, definitely museum quality. This has been a part of my son’s collection for many years. Please see pictures for the condition of the hat. If you have any questions or would like to see more pictures, please ask. It divided Spanish family and community under the rally cries of Church and State. Spain was to be the first step in the Empire building that was to become more sinister in the years to come with it be the proving ground for the tactics that were to define the Second World War: rapid mechanized assaults to numb circumvent or paralyze defensive positions, aerial attacks of industry and of civilians to break the will and production means to resist. It is interesting to compare the regimes reigns of power: Mussolini’s Italy: 1922- 1943. Hitler’s Germany: 1933- 1945 FRANCO’S SPAIN: 1939- 1975. Greater than the sum of his two powerful international supporters. Also compelling, is the contribution of Francoist Spain in the ideological war that was seeded with dragons’ teeth: Spain was to muster the Blue Division of some 18,000 soldiers to fight in Communist Russia while purportedly some 60,000 Spaniards (exiled in France) fought Fascism in France with the french Marquis. However, it is not my area of expertise and i cannot vouchsafe their authenticity. Regardless, they do represent a significant moment in Twentieth Century European history.
