Röhm set up the famous Brown-Shirts, the SA or Sturmabteilung (Storm Battalion) – a paramilitary police organization. Many of these were ex-Munich street thugs, and they protected Hitler and the Nazis during party rallies, and disrupted opposing (Marxist) party rallies. Until Hitler and Himmlers Black-Shirt bloody Night of the Long Knives in 1934, when Röhm was assassinated at the age of 47 for allegedly plotting to overthrow the Nazis. Röhm was also an open homosexual, but was not assassinated for this reason, contrary to rumor. The flyers old-fashioned Gothic font had been revived by the Nazis for party announcements, to symbolize the ancient greatness of Germany (before it had lost World War I).
