Antique Mexican Revolution Era Sword with Scabbard- SANTA FE Arms Collection
This swords has no visible markings but Im sure it was made in Mexico, most likely in the mid-1800s. A friend collected it in Mexico almost 40 years ago. I have seen many Mexican swords with the grip and guards covered in leather like this. I believe the sword was used up thru the Mexican Revolution. Gorilla soldiers that served with Pancho Villa and other bandit military leaders used whatever arms that were available including many Spanish Colonial swords. They almost always carried their swords on their saddles during the Mexican Revolution. The custom well made leather scabbard is in nice shape, not stiff. It was designed to be attached to the saddle. When attached to the saddle the metal guards and grips would become so hot in the bright sun and extreme heat soldiers could not hold the swords, so the leather covering was a common sense fix. I have owned a dozen like this. The sword is overall 34 the grip is tight. Thats about all I know about it. We described things as best we can but we are not experts in every field. You may know more about the item then we do. You are the judge as to quality and value. I try to list several new items every few days, so keep so keep checking my listings including early western and Mexican pieces. Ships USA only and only to the lower 48 states. This is a vintage Hungarian Cruciform Bayonet with the original matching scabbard. The cross-shaped blade is marked with the Hungarian crest and what appears to be F. F inside a shield. The blade of this bayonet is in beautiful original unrestored condition with wonderful patina. The total length of the bayonet is 22.5 inches, with the blade being 18 inches long. There are no nicks and the blade point is excellent. The push button in the pommel works fine. The muzzle ring measures 15mm. The grooved wood grip has some indentations on the back, but otherwise is in good condition. There is light rust on the crossguard and pommel. The steel scabbard shows signs of wear with some scratches and light rust spots, but is still strong and sturdy. The scabbard is 19.25 inches long.
