This is a tropical uniform ensemble as worn by a sergeant of The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in Palestine during the late 1930s. The set consists of: 1 Khaki drill frock; 2 Wolseley pattern foreign service helmet with red hackle; 3 White buff leather belt with General Service clasp; and 4 Sergeant’s red wool sash. The khaki drill frock is the 1922 pattern. It has a stand-up collar with BW post-1927 shoulder titles and detachable Black Watch post-1935 buttons. Sergeant’s desert khaki chevrons are o n each sleeve; one is detached and presently pinned to sleeve (see photo). There is evidence of other shoulder titles and collar badges once being attached as seen in the photos. Pointed cuffs are on the bottom of the sleeves (see photo). A brass belt hook is on each hip. Overall, this frock is in very good condition. The khaki Wolseley pattern Foreign Service Helmet is circa 1920s and has a 3 fold pagri with red hackle tucked in. An inside label reads E. ” The chin strap is impressed with “T. WEEKS & SONS 1917. One of the chin strap loops is disconnected and reattached with safety pin (see photo). Overall, the helmet is in very good clean condition with minimum wear. The white buff leather belt comes with a General Service waistbelt clasp that has a King’s Crown and DIEU ET MON DROIT on circlet. Part of the white buff tongue is missing (see photo). Names of various soldiers are written on the inside with dates from 1923 to 1971. The sergeant’s red wool sash is in great condition with only a little age related discoloration as would be expected. The 2nd Battalion of The Black Watch was stationed in Jerusalem October 1937 through August 1940 then to brief stops in the Suez Canal Zone and Aden before proceeding on to Somaliland and Crete later in 1940.
