At the time, Notoro was commanded by Captain Teizo Minami. The front cover is clearly marked: “North China Security / Shanghai Incident” “Showa 7″ (1932) “Notoro” Notoro was originally built as an oiler and was later converted for use as a seaplane tender, becoming part of the early development of Imperial Japanese naval aviation. During the First Shanghai Incident in 1932, aircraft from Notoro operated in the Shanghai area on reconnaissance and combat-related missions. This is therefore more than a souvenir album. Seaplane tenders played an important role before aircraft carriers became dominant, supporting reconnaissance, observation, and other aviation operations. For that reason, this album is also an interesting document of the early era of Japanese naval aviation. The binding has significant age-related damage and some pages show staining and wear. Please review the photos carefully for condition. This is an original prewar Japanese commemorative postcard set issued for the launch of the Kagu Maru on April 18, 1936, at the Harima Shipbuilding Works. What makes this set particularly fascinating is what happened to Kagu Maru after these postcards were produced. At the time of her launch in 1936, Kagu Maru was not yet a naval vessel. Following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, however, she was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1937 and converted into an auxiliary seaplane tender. Kagu Maru subsequently operated with Japanese naval aviation forces in China, carrying reconnaissance seaplanes and supporting operations including the campaigns around Jiujiang and Hankow. Her story ultimately ended on November 4, 1944, when she was attacked and sunk by U. Navy submarines off the Philippines. The original envelope is especially noteworthy. It is printed: “Kagu Maru Launch Commemorative Postcards” Harima Shipbuilding Co. The accompanying specification card is headed “Kagu Maru Launch Commemoration” and dated April 18, 1936. One postcard presents a color illustration of Kagu Maru at sea. It remains a small archival record of the vessel’s birth. In 1937, she became an Imperial Japanese Navy auxiliary seaplane tender. This is a rare original postcard set from the early days of Imperial Japanese Naval Aviation. The set consists of 5 postcards with the original envelope, showing scenes from the Yokosuka Naval Air Group and Oppama Airfield-one of the birthplaces of Japanese naval aviation. Printed Titles on Each Card. The postcards include the following original captions. “Imperial Japanese Navy Latest Yokosuka Arsenal Type Seaplane”. “Imperial Japanese Navy Tethered Observation Balloon Descending”. “Imperial Japanese Navy F-Type on Water and Yokosuka Type in Flight”. “Imperial Japanese Navy Latest F-Type Flying Boat in Operation”. “Imperial Japanese Navy Large Airship”. Based on the terminology such as “Yokosuka Arsenal Type” and “F-Type, ” along with the presence of seaplanes, flying boats, and airships, this set is believed to date from the late Taisho to early Showa period (approximately 1920s-early 1930s). This was before aircraft like the Zero Fighter existed. A time when naval aviation was still experimental and evolving. Why This Set Is Rare. Captures a very short transitional period in aviation history. Includes early technologies such as airships and observation balloons. Yokosuka was the central hub of Imperial Japanese naval aviation. Own a moment when steel met the sky. This original Taisho-era photograph captures the Imperial Japanese Navy battleship “Kashima”. Sailing proudly beneath a Maurice Farman seaplane – the symbol of Japan’s first steps into the age of naval aviation. In 1906 under the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. Named after the sacred Kashima Shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture, she embodied the spirit of a rising maritime nation. By the early 1910s-1920s, as Japan expanded its reach across the seas. The Navy began experimenting with flight – the Maurice Farman biplane seen here was among the first aircraft operated by the IJN. This rare composition of a battleship and an aircraft together marks a turning point. The moment when battleships still ruled, but the sky had begun to matter. The back inscription reads.
