This is an extremely rare prewar aviation set from the Imperial Japanese Army, consisting of a pilot’s service cap and personal flight logbook , dated 1933 (Showa 8). The set includes key elements of early Japanese military aviation history-when flight was still a frontier, and pilots were national symbols of progress and sacrifice. This soft visor cap features an orange wool band, indicating affiliation with the Imperial Flying Association (Teikoku Hiko Kyokai /)-a semi-governmental organization founded in 1910 to promote aviation across Japan. The front bears the extremely rare aviation badge with a stylized propeller over paulownia leaves, used for training pilots and youth aviation programs. Caps like this were issued to cadets or reserve aviators undergoing training in cooperation with the military. The included logbook records flights on the Type 88 Reconnaissance Aircraft, known as the “Atsurio-shiki Ni-Hachi-gata” (?????). This aircraft, produced by Kawasaki, was a biplane used by the Japanese Army during the early 1930s, especially during the Manchurian Incident. The entries show active training flights, totaling 18 sorties and 2 hours 20 minutes of airtime. This set captures a specific moment in time: the early militarization of Japanese aviation, the rise of pilot culture, and the involvement of the Empire’s civilian air associations in preparing young men for war. AIR ARMY SERVICE’S ” FOKKER T-2 ” AIRPLANE BEFORE THE WORLDS 1ST NON-STOP, COAST-COAST TRANS CONTINENTAL FLIGHT OF THE UNITED STATES AT ROCKWELL FIELD SAN DIEGO. CALIFORNIA DATED MAY 5+6,1923. ON THE ” FOKKER T-2 “. ARMY AIR SERVICE NON STOP COAST TO COAST. This Fokker was an airliner designed in the Netherlands in the early 1920s, with only two ever made, both for the United States Army Air Service and designated T-2. The aircraft made the first non- stop coast to coast flight of the continental United States in May 1923. In late 1922, Kelly and Macready made two attempts at the transcontinental flight. The first was made on 5 October 1922, departing San Diego, California for New York City. After 35 hours 18 minutes in the air, they were forced to abandon the attempt and land due to fog. This would have been a world duration record, but without a barograph on board, it could not be officially recognized by the FAI. Kelly and Macready tried again on 3 November, but this time engine trouble forced an emergency landing near Indianapolis after 25 hours 30 minutes. The following year, they made a long-duration flight over a closed circuit over Dayton, Ohio, remaining aloft for 36 hours, 14 minutes 8 seconds between 16 and 17 April. This established a new world duration record, but also a new distance record, weight record, and eight various airspeed records. On 2 May 1923, they set out from New York to attempt the transcontinental flight again, this time traveling in the opposite direction. 26 hours 50 minutes later, they landed in San Diego, having covered 4,034 km (2,521 mi). Their aircraft is preserved in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. THE ORIGINAL WAS HAND STAMPED ON THE UPPER RIGHT WITH THE DATE SEPT 23,1931, THE SAME DATE AS THE 1ST FLIGHT OF THE USS AKRON ZRS-4. HAND STAMPED IN THE COPY ON THE UPPER RIGHT: SEP 23,1931. DIMENSIONS: 8 1/2″ x 14″. Was a helium-filled rigid airship of the U. Navy which operated between September 23,1931 and April. She was the world’s 1st purpose-built flying aircraft carrier, carrying F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes which could be launched and recovered while she was in flight. With an overall length of 785 ft, the. Were among the largest flying objects ever built. Were some 18 ft longer and slightly more voluminous, the two German airships were filled with hydrogen, so the US Navy craft still hold the world record for helium-filled airships. Was destroyed in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey on the morning of 4 April 1933, killing 73 of the 76 crewmen and passengers. This accident involved the greatest loss of life in any airship crash.
