This is just a great original piece. I was lucky enough to acquire a small collection of 3 original Wayne Davis aeronautical military airplane paintings. I was going to just put them up one at a time but because they are all so different and might appeal to a very different collector, I have decided to list all 3 this week. For those not familiar with the artist I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful view of of the Vought Corsair SBU-1 US Navy Dive Bomber Biplane. Signed, titled, and dated lower left. Watercolor on paper measuring 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Excellent clean and vibrant condition. Very minor rippling to the paper. Pencil marks still evident in the lower areas for clouds. Original french matte is complimentary but does not look to be acid free and looks like it has left some matte burn. It also has some spotting. Original wood frame shows some nicks but is complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 21 1/4 x 25 1/4 inches. Pictures were difficult to get with out glare and reflections. Closeups show the real quality of the paintings. Full shots definitely have glares and reflections including lines that are not on the painting. A great chance to really build your collection. For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from askart reads: Wayne Lambert Davis was an artist and mining engineer from Pelham Manor, New York. He is known for his aviation subjects and landscapes, in watercolor, oils and etching. The son of a prominent executive, Davis graduated from Columbia University in 1926 with a degree in mining engineering. He spent a couple of years in merchandising and advertising for the silk industry and then at Macys. Then I got a crack at aviation with Curtis, he told an interviewer in 1941. Newspaper articles published between 1935 and 1941 describe him as a successful artist who was known for his depictions of aircraft and who had several exhibitions with Schwartz Galleries in New York. The 1941 interview found him about to leave on a gold mining expedition in the West, preparing designs for an aeronautical mural in one of the big airplane terminals in the New York area and planning to exhibit aviation etchings in prominent New York City art galleries. A proficient skier who taught skiing at Sun Valley and in Woodstock, New York, Davis also produced popular etchings and watercolors of ski scenes. CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS GREAT PIECE.
