An extremely rare example of the Nicaraguan Medal of Distinction. This medal was the second highest of four decorations that were awarded by the government of Nicaragua to US Navy and Marine Corps personnel for service in that country in the late 1920s and early 1930s. These decorations were presented in very limited numbers and rarely come on the market. I have seen a several examples of the Medal for Merit offered for sale over the years but have never seen any of the other decorations offered in a public sale. The Medal of Distinction offered here is marked 14k (as shown in the photo) but does not have any other marking, so the actual maker is unknown. The silk ribbon is authentic and correct for the medal but due to its age it cant be fitted to the medal ring without splitting. The two documents shown are ones that I copied from USMC correspondence files in the US National Archives in Washington and have not been previously published. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal is a campaign medal of the United States Navy & Marine Corps which was authorized by an act of the United States Congress on 8 November 1929. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was awarded for service during operations in Nicaragua from 1926 to 1933. An earlier campaign medal, the Nicaraguan Campaign Medal, was awarded for service in Nicaragua 1912. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was considered a separate award from the first version of the medal and Navy regulations permitted the receipt and wear of both decorations, if so authorized. Southerland, who had been in overall command of both Nicaraguan campaigns, was the first recipient of both versions of the Nicaraguan Campaign Medal. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal appeared as a medal suspended from a red ribbon with several white stripes. The medal displayed a woman (representing Columbia), armed with a sword, defending two other figures with a cloak. The medal bore the words Second Nicaraguan Campaign with the dates 1926 1930 displayed on the medals edges (although the medal was authorized until 1933). No devices were authorized. Two 1920 Marine Photo Albums American Legation Peking China 400 Images. Pvt I/c Joseph Hahn was a member of the 4th Marine American Legation at Peking China in 1920. There are 400 photos that really flesh out his service and places he visited and things he saw and experienced. Some were pretty gruesome as pictured but the others paint quite a picture of life at that time and in those places he visited. His journey started in Mare Island California and then to Yokohama and Nagasaki Japan where he photographed spots of interest, next to Cavite, Philippine Islands And finally to Peking, China. In China there were Military Legation troops from many other countries and Pvt Hahn photographed the m too. He photographed everything from daily routine to Outlaw firing squad executions, beheading for robbery, and death by 1000 cuts for rape. One photo I found of special interest is a woman reclining next to a huge anaconda after it had consumed a large meal. B iggest snake I have ever seen. There are many photos of Chinese culture and sacred p laces. Vintage 1927 Nicaragua Managua US Marine Aviators Sun Glasses Goggles USMC. From the Estate of a US Marine Aviator who served in Nicaragua during 1927 to 1930. The frames are made of Bakelite and the lenses are Amber Glass. The wire rims have a leather covering over them. They are in excellent condition with only slight discoloration in the leather behind the ears. The Glass lenses are removable as there is an aluminum bracket on the top that appears if unhooked will release the lenses. I did not try to do this however. Canvas case is also in excellent condition. No rust on the snaps. Any questions please ask! I tried them on and they fit very snugly to the eyes. 5.75 inches end hinge screw to end hinge screw. For your consideration is this scarce, 1920’s Era United States Marine Corps Enlisted Alpha Service Cover. It’s being offered by us, as found, uncleaned. The leather band, buttons, and leather bill are all in very good condition. The included EGA is original to the period and appears original to the cover as well. The inside leather band is in very good condition, but retains approximately half the original stitching, which is very common with covers this old. There is also a moth bite on the top about the size of a pin head. This is a very scarce, transitional period cover, and is one of the nicer examples we’ve seen for sale. Overall, this cover is a true survivor, and if you’re looking for a museum piece or want to top off a period uniform, this fantastically preserved piece has no issues, and is ready to be displayed proudly. Size is 7 1/4. Note – the side buttons are secured using pins as apposed to the later screw in button system.
