Offered here is a group on insignia to a Marine who served in the 79th Company (F/2/6) overseas during the Occupation. He went on to become an Army officer in WWII. Included is his EGA, two collar disks (same size), several buttons, and a glossy copy of a pencil sketch of the man. For some reason, he polished most of the finish off most of the insignias. The index card establishes provenance from his son. The EGA is an interesting mis-strike that eluded the inspector and saw use. The Marine’s name was Robert Barnes Johnson. His son wrote a biography. Co Commander, Camp Van Etten, New York & Camp Selkirk, Selkirk Shores State Park, New York. CO, ROTC Training, USA, WWII. 1973, who was an Army lieutenannt serving in CCC camps in western NY State in the 1930’s on EAD. He later served in WWII as a colonel running Army Reserve training (ROTC). Was born on April 13, 1900. He married Olyve Cole Eckler. Who was born March 16, 1899. They were married on August 20, 1920. They were both from small towns near Rochester, New York. Both came from pioneer stock, Olyve from the Puritans of Plymouth, Mass. In 1633, and he from the Whitfields, famous Methodist preachers of England. There was one child, myself, Franklyn Arthur. My father served as an enlisted man in the 6th Marine Division in WWI, then in the Florida National Guard and the Organized Reserve as a sergeant, then commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served in Florida as an Immigration Border Patrol Inspector in the 1930’s. He was a 1st Lieutenant at the start of WWII, assistant professor of Military Science at Rutgers University, and in other educational posts. He headed the military training education program as Commandant at the Long Island College of Medicine. His work in the CCC was, so far as I recall, limited to two camps, at Selkirk Shores State Park, Pulaski, NY, and Van Etten, NY, near Syracuse. We then lived in one of the rental houses at Selkirk and I attended Pulaski Academy, then Riverside Military Academy in Georgia and Florida. He then went to the Pentagon as liason officer for all ROTC units in the Army. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Rochester, 1960, and a master’s degree in education at Stetson University, 1965. He was an outstanding rifle and pistol shot, participating in many Florida National Guard and Reserve Corps state and national championships. My mother, Olyve Eckler. Served in the Civil Air Patrol, part of the Army Air Corps, during WWII. She was adjutant of the New Jersey Wing, held a commercial license for over twenty years, and also a license as a parachute rigger. After WWII she was Director of Flight Training at Riverside, then the nation’s largets military academy. She was a member of various women’s flight organizations, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. My father retired to the desert town of Hemet in Southern California after my mother’s death on December 19, 1963, and married Katherine Law Stage, a widow, in 1966. They became very active in such groups as the Sons of the American Revolution, Retired Officers Association, and the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Hemet. My father passed away on July 28, 1973. I have Dad’s master’s thesis (Steton Univ, 1965) entitled “The CCC and American Youth Education” (32 pages and bibliography). I have no anecdotal meterials, only memory of his serving at the camps at Van Etten and especially Selkirk Shores State Park, NY. By coincidence I served as national Director of the Job Corps under LBJ. The riker is not included. See my other auctions for more militaria. Add a map to your own listings. Rare China Marine Mess Sergeant’s Tunic – ID’d, circa 1930’s. This tunic is from a grouping of Thomas’s other uniforms, in another collection that is currently not for sale. This is how we have been able to identify this item to Sgt. Thomas, as this item is not individually marked itself. Overall in nice condition, with no areas of mothing and discoloration. One the back of the right sleeve, along the seam, there is a black substance that has stained approx. A 7 long section along the sleeve. There is wear throughout due to use by Thomas. On both sleeves the Mess Sergeant Rank is machine sewn on. Very nice Eagle, Globe and Anchors on both lapels with wear, toning and patina on both. Coat, shoulder and pocket buttons are have similar wear and scuffing with tight stitching on all. The only marking inside the tunic is the number “590” in the center near the collar. For your consideration is this scarce, 1920’s Era United States Marine Corps Enlisted Alpha Service Cover. It’s being offered by us, as found, uncleaned. The leather band, buttons, and leather bill are all in very good condition. The included EGA is original to the period and appears original to the cover as well. The inside leather band is in very good condition, but retains approximately half the original stitching, which is very common with covers this old. There is also a moth bite on the top about the size of a pin head. This is a very scarce, transitional period cover, and is one of the nicer examples we’ve seen for sale. Overall, this cover is a true survivor, and if you’re looking for a museum piece or want to top off a period uniform, this fantastically preserved piece has no issues, and is ready to be displayed proudly. Size is 7 1/4. The first reasonable offer will add this spectacular looking time-capsule to their collection. No disappointments, this piece is a gem. RARE ORIGINAL UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS 1898 SPANISH CAMPAIGN MEDAL, SPLIT WRAP BROOCH W/ OPEN “C” CATCH. BAILEY BANKS & BIDDLE. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The Marine Corps version of the Spanish Campaign Medal was created in June 1908 and issued to any member of either the Navy or Marine Corps who had served in the Philippine Islands between the dates of 1 May and 16 August 1898. Crews of select ships were eligible for the medal prior to 1 May. For service in the West Indies, the Navy awarded the West Indies Campaign Medal as well as the Sampson Medal which was authorized by a joint resolution of Congress in 1901. In 1913, the Navy discontinued the award of the West Indies Campaign Medal and extended the criteria of the Spanish Campaign Medal to any member of the Navy or Marine Corps who had served on active duty during the Spanish American War. The Spanish Campaign Medal was a military award of the United States Armed Forces which recognized those members of the U. Military who had served in the SpanishAmerican War. Although a single decoration, there were two versions of the Spanish Campaign Medal, one for members of the United States Army and another for the forces of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. Early versions of the Spanish Campaign Medal suspended the medal from a gold and red ribbon, but this design was changed in 1913 upon request from Spain that a United States service medal not bear the colors of the Spanish nation. [1] The new medal was suspended from a blue and yellow ribbon. Separate medallions existed for both the Navy and Army. Marine Corps recipients received the Navy version with the seal of the United States Marine Corps on the reverse of the medal. The only device authorized to the Spanish Campaign Medal was the Citation Star and then only for U. Army recipients of the decoration. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!
