I obtained this Tachi in Japan and have kept this sword in a long list of restoration projects but time and other family objecttives force this one to go to someone else. It is in old nice polish, bohi grooves on both sides and unsigned. It has a cutting edge of just under 79cm. Heavy sword with no chips, bends and small kissaki with. This would be an awesome restoration project and candidate for shinsa judging. The Edo period Tachi style mounts are really nice and with the length and deep sori of this sword is an exceptional historic Japanese Swords as is. The blade itself is much older and is a koto period Samurai Katana that was remounted in the 1890’s for the current mounts. The handle is complete but it is missing the locking latch on the side so the blade does not lock into the saya (scabbard). This is an extremely nice example of a Japanese D-Guard Army Officer’s Kyu Gunto Sword. It is mounted with a gorgeous well made grooved, unsigned blade which wears a cutting edge that measures 27 3/8 inches in length. The blade remains in near perfect original polished condition boasting its attractive actively wavy temper line. The fabulous large D-guard has now beautifully patined with age and frames a very nice white rayskin covered hilt that remains very healthy and continues to wear its original twisted wire wrap securely in place. The plated metal scabbard remains very nice as well with only some light flaking to the plating at the extreme drag edge and has no dings. Overall measuring 37 5/8 inches in length. This is a very nice example of a Large Variation of a Japanese Cavalry Officer’s Sword, Type 19 which would have been in service all the way up to World War II. It is mounted with a plated machine made large blade that measures 34 3/8 inches in length by 1 1/16 inches at the widest. The blade remains in nice condition with some minor surface blemishes. It wears a very nicely detailed pommel which frames a lovely horn hilt that although only a portion of the twisted wire remains, has survived in very healthy condition. The hilt also features a lovely floral motif and is accentuated with a beautiful silver family mon on the backstrap. The metal plated scabbard has some light flaking, particularly where it was hand carried, but does remain in very good serviceable condition. Overall measuring 42 5/8 inches in length.
