ORIGINAL UNITED STATES A RMY CHINA R ELEIF EXPEDITIONS MEDAL W/ F ULL WRAP BROOCH. STUDLEY & DAVIDSON OF PHILADELPHIA. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The China Campaign Medal was established by paragraph (c) of War Department General Orders Number 5 dated January 12, 1905. The China Campaign medal was awarded for qualifying service between the inclusive dates of June 20, 1900, and May 27, 1901. The China Campaign Medal was awarded for military service ashore in China with the China Relief Expedition between June 20, 1900, and May 27, 1901. The China Campaign Medal was worn after the Philippine Congressional Medal and before the Army of Cuban Pacification Medal. The only device authorized for the China Campaign Medal was the Silver Citation Star, a five-pointed star three-sixteenths of an inch in diameter. If authorized for gallantry in action during the Boxer Rebellion, the Silver Citation Star could be worn on the ribbon of the China Campaign Medal. A total of 47 Silver Citation Stars were retroactively awarded to 40 recipients for gallantry in action during the Boxer Rebellion. The China Campaign Medal was designed by Francis D. In the center of a bronze medallion one and a quarter inches in diameter, a Chinese five-toed dragon in the full face position, encircled by the words CHINA RELIEF EXPEDITION 1900 – 1901, the words being separated from the dates by bullets. According to Millet, the Imperial Chinese dragon was often represented in a circle; so, this favorite Chinese design was chosen to symbolize the location and identity of the opponent in this campaign. The Chinese illustrate the Imperial dragon with the Pearl of Immorality not far from its opened mouth. Millet deleted the Pearl of Immortality in this representation thus alluding to victory over the Boxers. Another reason he selected the dragon rather than a building, according to a letter he wrote to General Humphrey, was that having already an architectural form, so to speak, on the Spanish Medal, I thought it would not look well to have a second architectural form in the line of medals you and others will wear. The reverse shows an eagle with wings displayed, alight upon a trophy consisting of a canno;, six rifles and four standards; an Indian shield; a quiver of arrows and three spears; a Cuban machete, and a Sulu kris. The whole is enclosed by a circle composed of the words, UNITED STATES ARMY in the upper half, and thirteen stars in the lower half. The standards represent the five great wars of the United States as of 1905: the Revolution; the War of 1812; the Mexican War; the Spanish-American War; and the Philippine Insurrection. The weapons suggest the armed resistance offered by the defeated opponents in those wars. The eagle is the American bald eagle and represents the United States, and the thirteen stars allude the original colonies and symbolize unity. The six rifles, four standards, and three spears total thirteen, which is consistent with the thirteen stars at the bottom of the medal. The ribbon to the China Campaign Medal is yellow with blue edges. The yellow was selected by Millet because it was one of the colors of the Imperial Manchu dynasty; the blue edges were employed to distinguish the ribbon from all others. ORIGINAL 1930’S UNITED STATES NAVY 1912 NICARAGUAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, SPLIT WRAP BROOCH W/ OPEN C CATCH. DAVIDSON & GEORGE W. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED U. NEGATIVE AS SHOWN IN PHOTO #12. The Nicaraguan Campaign Medal is a campaign medal of the United States Navy which was authorized by Presidential Order of Woodrow Wilson on September 22, 1913. A later medal, the Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was authorized by an act of the United States Congress on November 8, 1929. The two medals were considered two separate awards, with the original medal being commonly referred to as the First Nicaraguan Campaign Medal. The First Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was created to recognize those U. Navy personnel and U. Marines who had participated in amphibious actions in Nicaragua between 29 July and 14 November 1912. The following naval commands, and all embarked U. Marines, were eligible for the First Nicaraguan Campaign Medal. USS California (armored cruiser). USS Cleveland (protected cruiser). USS Colorado (armored cruiser). USS Denver (protected cruiser). USS Maryland (armored cruiser). USS Tacoma (protected cruiser). The medal for the First Nicaraguan Campaign Medal displayed a volcano, rising from a lake, with the words Nicaraguan Campaign and the date 1912 on the edges of the medal. The medal itself was suspended from a red ribbon with two thick blue stripes. On the reverse of each medal was a Navy or Marine Corps crest, depending on the recipient’s branch of service. The First Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was a one-time-only decoration and there were no devices or attachments authorized. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! 1920S-1930S UNITED STATES ARMY CIVIL WAR CAMPAIGN MEDAL, W/ WRAP BROOCH. ASSEMBLED BY GEORGE W. STUDLEY – STRUCK BY DAVIDSON OF PHILADELPHIA. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The Civil War Campaign Medal is considered the first campaign service medal of the United States Armed Forces. The decoration was awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces and the Confederate States Armed Forces who had served in the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865. The medal was first authorized in 1905 for the fortieth anniversary of the Civil War’s conclusion. The blue and gray ribbon denotes the respective uniform colors of the U. The Army Civil War Campaign Medal was established by the United States War Department on January 21, 1907, by General Orders Number 12. To qualify, a soldier had to serve between April 15, 1861, and April 9, 1865. The award was intended for both federal and volunteer soldiers. When it was discovered that medal qualifications included the words Active Federal Military Service, the Congressional Act of 1945 had those words removed. Army, Units with Confederate lineage use campaign streamers with the Gray edge up and Units with Union lineage use campaign streamers with the blue edge up. The campaign lettering requires two distinct sets of streamers for each campaign, one set for each side. The closing date was extended to August 20, 1866, date of President Johnson’s Proclamation ending the war. The corresponding Navy Civil War Medal was established on June 27, 1908, by Navy Department. The obverse of the Army Civil War Campaign Medal displayed an engraved image of Abraham Lincoln while the Navy and Marine Corps versions depicted the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia’s battle at Hampton Roads. The medal was designed by Francis D. Millet, a noted sculptor who perished on the RMS Titanic in 1912. The medal was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Civil War Campaign Medal No. 1 was issued to Maj. Humphrey on May 26, 1909. The medal was originally established as a badge, because Congress would not approve a medal due to the costs involved. The War Department was authorized to create badges, so it did. This interest was due in large part to the fact that several senior military officers were veterans of the Civil War. In 1918, for those who had been cited for gallantry in action, the Silver Citation Star was authorized as a device to the medal. Only six Citation Stars were awarded. There is a direct relationship between U. Campaign streamers and the medal that a campaign represents. The streamer represents the unit’s participation in a campaign and the medal represents an individual’s participation in that campaign U. Army some differences for the U. When a campaign is established, participating unit’s are authorized a streamer and each service member assigned to the unit during that same time is authorized the medal. Sometimes these medals are campaign medals, other times they are service medals, but that streamer/medal relationship normally remains. Although some recipients may have worn some form of the ribbon, the monies necessary to mint and issue the medal were not appropriated by Congress until 1956 91 years after the war ended. It was this act that provided U. Units in the U. Army that trace their heritage and lineage to the Civil War are entitled to display a battle streamer for the Civil War on their flagpoles. This streamer is half blue and half gray, the color theme of the second ribbon design. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!
