POLAND POLISH ORDER OF THE VIRTUTI MILITARI, 1930s restrike 5th class, silver gilt and enamels. Many were made from original dies. This example has a new ribbon. Super enamels with large and heavy suspension. Copies of VMs were made before the war as replacements for lost government issued numbered type. These copies were made mostly in silver gilt from bronze/brass metal. About 10 different jewelers all over Poland made them. Polish military regulations required that the highest decoration a soldier was awarded be worn at all times even in combat or in training. Most of these original VMs were lost during WWII when Polish soldiers were captured or executed as in the case of the Katyn Forest Massacre where 20,000 Polish officers and enlisted were executed by the Soviets. Photos are seen with bodies still wearing their decorations. The collection offered for sale here consists of many different copies made before and after the war in cheaper design as well as pre WW. In most cases when copies were made by Gontarczyk, Wabinski, Reising, Knedler or Krupski and Matulewic. These copies were made from the same dies, same metal but without the official number on the lower reverse arm of the cross. Only the official government issued VMs were numbered from 1-9,999. There were never any numbered duplicates made. Post war copies were made from new dies and the quality was very inferior as seen on current copies made by Panansiuk. The free listing tool. POLAND POLISH REGIMENTAL CIGARETTE CASE, STERLING with hallmarks. 5.8 ounces, 3 by 4 inches. Warsaw Palace and large 2 by 2.5 inch TOPOR coat of arms. A superb example of Polish jewelry workmanship. An award to an officer on November 4th 1933 by his commanding officer for outstanding performance of military duty which did not merit a decoration. The inscription reads, NAGRODA DOWODCY KWO POLSIE, 4. Some of these cigarette cases were also give out during regimental award ceremonies, returning to the reserves or other events commemorating a major event pertaining to the recipient. 65, 67, 68 POLAND POLISH 1921 ORDER OF SILESIA GRAND CROSS SET COMPLETE, The set consists of the 75mm grand cross medal, four piece 80mm breast star badge and a four piece 55mm breast star badge with a sash. One of rarest Polish decorations established by the Upper Silesian Military Authority and awarded to high ranking officers, foreigners and diplomates who made an outstanding contribution to the victory of the Silesian Uprising in returning the Silesian region to Poland from Germany. The grand cross medal was worn on a sash with the large star in formal wear. The small star was worn on uniforms and civilian attaire. The set was made by Wabia Wabinski. The six piece grand cross is hallmarked on reverse with the maker name. It was made in sterling silver with superb quality and enamels. Extremely rare original medal especially in this condition. #26 POLISH POLAND ORDER OF THE VIRTUTI MILITARI. A three part construction with gold gilt and enameled medal cross. Superb quality on original Swiss made ribbon. Very rare original made in 1921 by Krupski and Matulewicz who made 170 3rd classes for the Ministry of Military Affairs. It is the only higher class pre WWII VM available on the market. It should belong to a person who charishes the true meaning of this superb decoration. Original pre WWII Commanders and Grand Crosses are impossible to obtain at any price.
