Order of Malta Knights Gilt Sterling Medal In Original Case
Offered is a rare gilt sterling silver Sovereign Military Order of Malta Knight of Magistral Grace Class medal complete in original presentation case. The Order of Merit of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, Knight of Magistral Grace features a large white enamel Maltese cross with gilt fleur-de-lis between the arms, suspended from a large gilt crown, suspended from a gilt ribbon bow with a red enamel shield bearing a white enamel cross, suspended from an oblong suspension ring for the neck ribbon. Excellent condition; all the enamel is intact with no damage, there is some oxidization to the gilding. Measures 5 7/8 inches height overall. It is marked Sterling and with an illegible makers mark directly underneath the hook on the back of the bow. Retains the original neck ribbon in the original fitted presentation case, the lid incised to reveal a white Maltese cross. The Order , popularly referred to as the Knights of Malta, was in existence as long ago as the early years of the 12th Century and is still extant today. In 1834 the order established a new headquarters in Rome and took on its current humanitarian and ceremonial role with Grand Masters being appointed by the Pope.
